Careful selection of hides and gentle processing preserve the leather’s natural characteristics while creating a durable and resilient material.All leather types used are chrome-free tanned, breathable, and dyed through. This process ensures that minor scratches become almost invisible with continued use.Depending on the application, very thin layers of protective coating are applied. The thicker the layer, the more resistant the leather becomes. LeatherAudi primarily uses hides from cattle raised in Southern Europe for its seat leather. These hides have a unique balance of surface area and thickness, making them particularly well-suited. The leather taken from the animal’s back features a uniform fiber structure and rarely shows tears or damage. To be processed as Audi exclusive leather, the following quality criteria must be met:Chrome-free tanning process

Audi, as a pioneer in the automotive industry, discontinued the use of chrome salts over two decades ago to avoid hazardous heavy-metal waste. Audi uses only chrome-free tanned leather, thereby taking clear ethical responsibility in leather manufacturing.Surface protection
Depending on the quality of the leather, various surface finishes are developed. These different finishing techniques ensure high breathability.Testing cycle
Leather parts in a vehicle are exposed to extreme wear: temperature fluctuations, sunlight, friction from entering and exiting the vehicle, transporting heavy items, perspiration, and more.Before any leather is approved for use in an Audi, it must pass more than 30 different tests. In the laboratory, tests assess abrasion resistance, colorfastness, shrinkage behavior, flexibility, tensile strength, interior emissions, and fire resistance, among other factors. Only after all tests are successfully passed is the leather approved for use in seats and interior components. The testing process lasts more than 12 months.Wood/Decorative InlaysAudi uses only genuine wood and does not use tropical wood. The fine veneer sheets used for decorative inlays are peeled from tree trunks or burl wood knots. To ensure visual consistency across vehicle components, veneers typically come from the same tree trunk or burl.Production involves a combination of craftsmanship and mechanical processes.After production, each component undergoes a thorough quality inspection. Under ultraviolet light, checks are made for cracks, inclusions, and any imperfections in the sealing layer. The final varnishes are scratch-resistant for easier cleaning and include a UV blocker to ensure long-term color stability.
